Step 1    Measuring for a roller blind, first determine whether the blind will be architrave fit or recess fit. When measuring for an architrave installation, run your tape from the outside of the architrave to the other side, do not make any deductions, this measurement is now called your pin measure. If you are going to install the blind inside the recess of the window, run your tape from from inside the frame to the other side, now deduct 5mm from your overall measurement, again this is called your pin measure. When measuring a roller blind the most critical measurement is your width size. Now to measure the height of the blind run your tape from the top of the architrave to the floor. This is often referred to as your drop measurement.

2.                 I am going to use an example measurement of 2000mm wide x 2000mm drop, most roller blind material is either 2400mm wide or some fabrics measure 3000mm wide. Now dependant on the size of the width of your blind will determine how much material you will need to purchase. For this example you need to add 400mm on whatever your overall drop measurement, i.e. 2000mm + 400mm, = 2400mm this is exactly how much material is required for your overall blind. You can purchase roller blind material from hardware stores or your local curtain supplier.

Step 3    The following items you will require to complete your blind, a sharp roller Stanley knife or cutting blade, 3m double side tape, masking tape, and a clean flat area to work on. 

Step 4    Now to go your local blind supplier and order a roller blind kit, this will include the tube size, the end brackets and chain system. All blind suppliers will provide these to you, remember when ordering your roller blind kit size, ensure that you give them your pin measurement.

Step 5 The material that you have purchased will generally be wider than you actually require, i.e. you may have purchase material 2400mm wide but your blind is only 1900mm wide, we now need to cutback the material to the exact width that we require. The easiest and most efficient way to do this is if our measurement of our blind is 2000mm as an example, we need to deduct 27mm from this measurement, this is our overall width of material that we require. Our new size will be 2000mm less 27mm = 1973mm wide. This is our cloth measurement

Step 6    Cutting the material – measure the width that you require. Mark with a pencil ensuring the measurement is square on the material from the top to the bottom, now crease the material where you want to cut and use your roller Stanley cutting knife to cut the fabric. Most roller blind material is polyester and will cut relatively easy.
You have now completed a vital part in the making of your roller blind.

Step 7 Now what we are going to do here is attach the material to the roller bind itself, normally when we are learning how to make a roller blind we would have set a site an area to lay the material out flat. Now on your roller blind tube use your double side tape and run 2 layers of it from one side to the other, repeat again immediately below where you have done the first layer, this should now be covering approximately 70mm of an area across the tubing

Step 8 Lay your material out flat and now very slowly put your roller tube on at the very to of the material, press firmly and this should now be attached. Now using the masking tape run this across the top of material and half onto the roller. This basically is an added attaching method for your roller blind.

Step 9 Roll your blind up ensuring that it is rolling straight up, if it is not, re-adjust your material on the roller, the material must be square on the roller otherwise it will trail off to one side.

Step 10 Now for the bottom hem, again put a crease in the material approximately 5cms from the bottom, fold this up and again use 2 layers of the double sided tape, this will ensure that the pocket remains together. If you want you can put a flat timber batton inside the bottom hem. Now install your brackets and you are ready to go.
